Microdosing with Edibles to Fight Anxiety

 

There is no denying that we are living in a crazy time. It seems like there is something new to worry about every day and people are experiencing anxiety in unprecedented numbers. Although the majority of my days are spent feeling comfortable and happy that I am able to do what I am passionate about, in a place where I feel most at home, surrounded by people that I love, everyday a worried, nagging voice creeps in and tries to convince me that I am not enough. This anxious feeling is much worse on days like Sunday when the horrific tragedy in Las Vegas reminded us that we aren’t safe and that some people out there are crazier than you could have imagined. Lucky for me, I work in an industry that promotes wellness, self care and good vibes through the use of cannabis and I am taking full advantage. By taking small doses of THC throughout the day, think 5 milligrams (which I refer to as MG), I am able to curb my anxieties, manage stressful situations and continue to hustle at the level necessary for me to succeed at this critical time for legalization in California. 

 

Microdosing with edibles means ingesting just enough THC for you to experience the medicinal effects without feeling a strong head high. This can be tricky to do when the majority of the edibles being sold in dispensaries are 100MG each and to divide one cookie into twenty 5MG bites means you are essentially eating a crumb. This old fashioned view of edibles makes sense, since edibles were originally created as a way to use the trimmed leaves of the cannabis plant that can’t be sold or smoked. The problem with that model is that the resulting cannabutter gets infused with an unknown amount of active THC. After one bite, even the most experienced smoker can accidentally ingest anywhere from 1MG to 100MG of THC resulting in either no effect at all or the craziest, most uncomfortable high of their life. This has ruined the reputation of edibles everywhere and it never surprises me when I offer someone a 5MG chocolate pretzel and they cringe and refuse after having a bad experience.

 

Modern edibles have evolved so much and these days they are a convenient and discreet way to medicate without having to inhale smoke or vapor. The high is so different from smoking since the THC is absorbed through the stomach and when dosed correctly you can experience a relaxing full body high, which can help with relieving aches and pains. And of course a light head high which curbs anxiety while allowing you to work or relax. Recent advances in edible technology, like using THC distillate instead of cannabutter, allow edibles to be dosed precisely and packaging has thankfully evolved to the point where eating an unmarked edible is out of the question.
